Lamai is also located on the east
coast, just south of Chaweng and it is a little
bit smaller and quieter than Chaweng. Lamai was
the original destination for travelers to Samui
and compared to Chaweng the town is a bit more
low budget, but it has its own distinct charm.
In the last couple of years more luxury resorts
settled in Lamai and now you will find every
range of accommodation from low budget up to
luxury.
The beach in Lamai is certainly
less crowded and touristy than in Chaweng. The
southern end of the bay features elegant granite
boulders while the beach itself seems endless.
South of Lamai you can find one of the island's
main tourist attractions, Hin Ta & Hin Yai, also
known as Grandfather & Grandmother Rock. A
beautiful scenery for some nice holiday
pictures. The beach itself is a little bit more
coase-grained and not as soft as in Chaweng. The
waters deepen quickly and are therefore
excellent for swimming.
Lamai's beach road is less crowded and bustling
than in Chaweng. There are some nice and
inexpensive restaurants located along the road
with great Thai and Western Food. You find lot's
of shopping opportunities, massage salons and
despite the fact that Lamai is more bleary it
offers as well some fun nightlife with bars,
Thai boxing, cabaret shows and a few clubs.
Lamai is actually a large and beautiful
valley and as one travels inland away from the beach village
the landscape is striking. Lamai has a lovley old Wat (temple)
and is also the location of some great original spas, where
you can detoxify and get one with nature.
