Nathon, on the southwestern coast
is the island's capital city and the centre for
government administration and home to the main
post office, police station, the immigration
department as well as the major banks and the
main ferry port, which connects Samui to the
mainland. The ring road stretch that passes
through the town holds the majority of shops
available and many restaurants and hotels reside
close to the pier.
The beaches here are not
recommended for swimming and lack the beauty or
deep waters found on the east coast of the
island. Gorgeous for some holiday pictures are
the stunning sunsets.
The city of Nathon offers shopping with some of
the best prices to be found anywhere on the
island, but everything is less varied than in
Chaweng or Lamai. The open-air food market is
piled high with inexpensive and fresh local
products and is worth a visit. The inexpensive
restaurants offer some great Thai or Chinese
food. There is hardly any nightlife, but a
nightly food market establishes itself regularly
with some delicious freshly made Thai food.
Nathon boasts a number of original teak
shop-houses, lining the quiet middle roads, showing the more
traditional, Chinese influenced, Samui life. Any major local
events, ceremonies or celebrations are held in the car park
in front of the main pier in Nathon.
